Description

In a Bahamian harbor a fever‑stricken traveler, Christopher “Kit” Kirby, is taken under the wing of the unconventional Dr. Ulswater. The doctor, a world‑traveled scholar with a silver mine in Nevada, spends his days luring cuttlefish from coral ledges, a pastime that helps Kit recover from yellow fever and forges a quick, lively friendship. Their conversations drift between scientific curiosity and philosophical ramblings, revealing a mind as deep and untethered as the sea.

Soon they spot a pristine white yacht named Violetta bobbing nearby, its brass fittings catching the sun. A calm woman at the rail, knitting in a striped awning, welcomes them despite the doctor’s skeptical remarks about “frizzle‑brained” women. As the steps are lowered and the deck comes into view, the scent of salt and the promise of distant ports stir Ulswater’s musings on illusion and truth, hinting at an expedition where science, philosophy, and unexpected companionship will set sail together.
