A weary newspaper owner in a sleepy Midwestern town finds his livelihood on the brink of collapse. Tom Dennis, once a bright‑eyed reporter with dreams of running his own paper, is forced to confront mounting debts, hostile locals, and the bitter sting of defeat. When an unexpected visitor arrives with a cryptic offer, Tom’s desperation drives him toward a daring chance he never imagined.
The promise leads him aboard the schooner “Pelican,” a weather‑beaten vessel bound for the distant, untamed waters of the Pacific. Alongside the spirited society reporter Florence Hathaway and a crew of colorful characters, Tom sets out to chase a rumor of treasure, redemption, and a fresh start. As the ship leaves port, the horizon opens to adventure, but the sea holds its own perils and secrets, and the first leg of the journey will test the resolve of everyone on board.
