Description

Clement J. Cleggett is the picture of quiet routine, a seasoned copy‑desk clerk who has spent a decade turning out the night news in a Brooklyn newspaper. One ordinary April evening a terse telegram arrives from his estranged brother, announcing the sudden death of their notoriously temperamental uncle and a surprising fortune that could be theirs. The unexpected windfall jolts Cleggett out of his steady, colorless life, and for the first time in years a spark of daring flickers in his eyes.

Compelled by the promise of wealth and the mystery surrounding the uncle’s will, Cleggett steps beyond the newsroom and into a world of maritime intrigue. He soon finds himself aboard the schooner Jasper B., where a cast of colorful characters—skippers, a mysterious lady, and a rival with a hidden agenda—populate the decks. As a storm gathers and secrets begin to surface, Cleggett must decide whether to cling to his old habits or seize the adventure that now lies ahead.

Best known for the witty, lowercase adventures of archy the cockroach and mehitabel the alley cat, this American humorist turned newspaper columns into something warm, odd, and unforgettable. His work mixes satire, sympathy, and a sharp eye for everyday absurdity.
