THE CASTAWAY
The modest shop in Shinglesea becomes a stage for an emotional homecoming, as Mrs. Boxer watches the lamps flicker on and the sea beat against a distant beach. When a bruised, bearded stranger forces his way through the doorway, the town’s women rush to his side, tears and laughter mixing in a chaotic greeting. Their reunion is raw and immediate, full of questions about the mysterious disappearance that has haunted the community for three years.
John Boxer, once presumed dead after the North Star vanished in the South Pacific, tells a fragmented tale of survival—clinging to a grating after his ship sank, drifting for days, and being rescued by a native canoeist. He hints at an isolated island of yellow sand and palm trees, a place where time seemed to stand still, before a trading schooner finally carried him back to England. As he settles into the familiar easy‑chair, listeners are left with the promise of untold stories from that remote shore and the lingering mystery of what truly happened while he was lost at sea.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
