Description

Geraldine, a bright‑hearted nine‑year‑old, looks back on a childhood spent in a soot‑stained industrial town where the sky was often hidden behind chimney smoke. Though her family’s home is modest and their finances tight, her parents strive to create a warm, loving environment, filling her world with stories, simple pleasures and the close bond she shares with her older brother Haddie. The narrator’s vivid recollections capture the contrast between the bleak surroundings and the rich inner life of a child who finds wonder in everyday moments.

Through Geraldine’s eyes we glimpse the challenges of growing up without a governess or formal schooling, and the subtle pressures of a community divided between wealth and modesty. Her father’s hopeful words about a future “ship” that might bring comfort linger as a promise of change. As the story unfolds, Geraldine’s simple wishes for a brighter life set the stage for the unexpected events that will reshape her family’s world.
