Description

A quiet, observant mind guides the story, following Edward Fillery from his exotic birth in the rugged Caucasus to his upbringing in the orderly world of London. The son of an ambitious engineer and a wild mountain shepherd’s daughter, Edward inherits a restless yearning for the distant valleys of his childhood, a scent of azalea and the roar of the Koura that lingers in his thoughts. As a young adult he turns his keen, detached curiosity into a career in psychology and medicine, hoping to untangle the motives behind human actions and perhaps mend the flaws he sees in others.

The novel balances Edward’s internal analysis with vivid recollections of the untamed landscape that shaped him, creating a tension between his scientific rationality and the lingering, almost mystical pull of his heritage. Early encounters with friends, lovers, and rivals test his resolve, offering a glimpse of the moral dilemmas he will pursue throughout his life. The first act sets the stage for a thoughtful exploration of identity, memory, and the quest to understand what drives us all.
