Description

A bright‑voiced narrator looks back on the day she turned nine, recalling the cramped house, the smell of sponge‑cakes, and the tangled mix of jokes and worries that filled the rooms. She introduces her two brothers—Tom, the elder, and little Racey—along with the eccentric adults who hover near the fire, all rendered with a playful, almost musical cadence.

When news arrives that Papa, a clever man with mysterious letters after his name, must travel to China, the children feel the first tremor of loss. Their recovery from a bout of measles is interrupted by the weight of his departure, and the narrator’s tender observations reveal how each sibling copes, from Tom’s sleepy serenity to Racey’s eager footman service.

The story balances the innocence of childhood games with the growing awareness of adulthood’s demands, inviting listeners to share in the bittersweet moment when a family’s world tilts, but the bonds of love and imagination hold steady.
