Description

Four friends in khaki—Rob, the decisive patrol leader, Tubby, the good‑natured big guy, lean‑eyed Sim, and the ever‑cheerful Andy—are on a train headed from Long Island into the heart of New York State. Their conversation drifts from cramped railway meals to a lingering curiosity about a remote farm in the Adirondacks, where Sim’s cousin Ralph is rumored to be a solitary “grouch” with a surprisingly deep knowledge of wildlife. Intrigued by the challenge, Rob decides the Eagle Patrol will visit the farm, hoping to show Ralph that scouts are anything but overrated and to win a new, capable recruit for their troop.

The journey promises rugged trails, campfire camaraderie, and a chance for the boys to test their skills against the wilderness. Along the way they must navigate unfamiliar terrain, keep a sense of humor about their cramped quarters, and confront the subtle test of proving their own courage and teamwork to a skeptical newcomer. Listeners will feel the rhythm of a classic adventure as the scouts set out to earn a badge of true bravery.

John Henry Goldfrap

1879–1917

An English-born journalist who turned out fast-paced adventure stories for young readers, he became one of the many hidden hands behind early 20th-century boys' series fiction. Writing under a string of pseudonyms, he helped shape an era of dime-novel excitement from the newsroom to the bookstand.
