Description

A sumptuous volume of fine, hand‑coloured engravings brings together some of the most unusual and newly discovered plants of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Each plate is paired with concise botanical notes rendered in both Latin and English, following the Linnaean system so readers can follow the scientific terminology as well as admire the art. The work is organized by class and order, offering a clear framework for comparing the curious forms it presents.

Among the featured specimens are a flesh‑coloured Sansevieria that bears a single‑seeded berry, a yellow‑bottomed white crocus whose fragrant February blooms rise above very narrow leaves, and a stiplied milkwort with strikingly detailed foliage. The accompanying text records how these rarities arrived from distant gardens, how they were cultivated in hothouses, and the methods used to propagate them. The blend of meticulous description and vivid illustration makes the volume a timeless resource for botanists, gardeners, and anyone fascinated by the hidden diversity of the plant world.
