The Babes in the Wood One of R. Caldecott's Picture Books

A sorrowful old ballad tells of two young siblings left orphaned after their parents’ deaths. Their grieving father entrusts them to their uncle, who promises to protect them and secure their future—but the children’s inheritance soon awakens his greed.

Carried away under the pretense of a happy journey, the innocent boy and girl travel toward the forest, chattering cheerfully and unaware of the danger ahead. Told in memorable, traditional verse, this compact tale balances gentle childhood charm with a dark warning about betrayal, cruelty, and the vulnerability of those who have no one to defend them. The accompanying illustrations bring expressive characters, woodland shadows, and moments of wry humor to life, creating a classic listening experience for families and lovers of narrative poetry.
