The Babes in the Wood May Bells Series
THE BABES
CHILDREN IN THE WOOD.
The story opens with a devoted Norfolk couple facing death and entrusting their two young children to the care of their uncle. Their will provides generously for both the boy and Jane, but it also creates a dangerous temptation for the relative who stands to inherit if they do not reach adulthood. After the parents die, the children enter their uncle’s household, unaware that greed has begun to shape his plans.
Promising to send them to London for a better upbringing, the uncle places the trusting siblings in the hands of two hired men. As the children chatter cheerfully on their journey, their innocence unsettles the men and throws the cruel scheme into confusion. This traditional ballad blends tender portraits of childhood with suspense, betrayal, and a stark moral warning about the duties owed to vulnerable children and the consequences of abusing trust.
