Description

In the sweltering summer of 1864, a Union officer finds himself posted on a remote Southern island, its tangled gardens of roses and camellias surrounding a crumbling plantation house. Nightfall transforms the landscape into a maze of moonlit woods and silent marshes, where the flicker of distant fires marks the line between friend and foe. From his perch on horseback or a skiff, he sketches maps, listens to the rustle of reeds, and feels the pull of curiosity that borders on recklessness. The narrative captures the stark beauty and constant danger of Civil‑War outpost duty.

As the officer grapples with the discipline of military orders and his own restless yearning for adventure, he confronts the paradox of war—its moments of breathtaking stillness against sudden bursts of violence. Encounters with hidden scouts, whispered reports, and the ever‑present threat of betrayal keep the tension taut. Listeners are drawn into a vivid portrait of a soldier’s inner life, where fear, wonder, and duty collide beneath a perpetual Southern night.
