Description

Late in the autumn of 1836 an Austrian warship dropped anchor in New York, delivering a group of political exiles who had fled oppression in search of true liberty. Their first breaths of American air were filled with relief and hope, as they sensed a land where free thought could finally flourish without the watchful eye of a despot. Warm welcomes from generous locals quickly turned the strangers’ anxiety into a sense of belonging.

Among them stood Eleutario Felice Foresti, a tall, earnest man whose moral vigor and scholarly passion made an immediate impression. In New York he became a beloved teacher of Italian language and literature, sharing the works of Tasso, Dante, Manzoni and Leopardi with eager audiences while embodying the patriotic spirit of his homeland. Though weakened by years of hardship, his determination never waned, and the promise of a healthier climate eventually drew him back to Italy, where his experience abroad would later shape a new diplomatic role.
