The story follows Winfield Fowler, a young physician who has left his practice in Perth to answer a desperate, garbled transmission from his old mentor, Dr. Horace Austen. The message, repeated over short‑wave radios across Australia, claims that Austen is trapped in a hidden realm beneath the legendary Mountain of the Moon, a jagged monolith rising from the Great Victoria Desert. Intrigued and uneasy, Fowler gathers a few supplies, his uncle’s experimental equipment, and sets out into the blistering outback, driven by both scientific curiosity and a personal pledge to rescue a friend.
As the caravan draws near the stark basalt cliffs, the landscape takes on an otherworldly quality—crystalline spires, a silver lake, and a faint, alien hum that hints at a civilization far beyond Earth. Fowler’s journey quickly turns from a simple rescue mission into an encounter with strange terrors and a mysterious crystal city guarded by a woman named Melvar. The narrative balances vivid desert imagery with a growing sense of dread, inviting listeners to wonder whether humanity’s reach will uncover wonders or awaken forces it cannot control.
