Description

A young officer in a crisp Guards uniform steps onto the bustling platform at Waterloo, his fate intertwined with that of his companion, “The Lad.” Their chatter about drafts, the looming Somme, and a chance encounter with a bearded bishop offers a wry glimpse of the camaraderie that will sustain them. As the train barrels toward the coast, the pair savor a modest lunch, sharing jokes and a tentative flirtation with a teashop waitress, while the reality of war still feels distant.

Boarding a surprisingly clean transport ship, the two ensigns find themselves amid a kaleidoscope of regiments—Irish Rifles, Royal Territorials, yeomanry—and a mixture of seasoned veterans and fresh conscripts. The cramped decks and noisy decks become a classroom where the young officers hone their observational skills and confront the unsettling sight of men returning from leave. Their early journey, marked by humor and uneasy anticipation, sets the tone for a wartime odyssey that will test both their resolve and their humanity.
