The Absentee

Set against the glitter of early‑nineteenth‑century English society, the tale follows an Irish aristocratic family trying to adopt the airs of London fashion. Lady Clonbrony, eager to speak and move like a true Englishwoman, endures endless lectures from her acquaintances about proper manners and accent. Her son, the charming Lord Colambre, watches the charade with growing unease and feels a tug of conscience toward the tenants his parents have left behind in Ireland.

Compelled by that conscience, Colambre dons a simple cloak and slips away to the Irish countryside, where he can see the estates and people his parents ignore. His journey brings him to the extravagant Tusculum, a manor run by the flamboyant Mrs. Raffarty, whose tour of artificial grottoes, Chinese bridges and over‑styled gardens offers a comic contrast to the stark realities outside. Through these encounters the young lord begins to question the responsibilities of his birth and the true cost of pretension.
