Description

A teenage boy finds himself thrust into the chaotic heat of the Peninsular War, where the rugged Spanish mountains become a battlefield of thunderous volleys and fleeting shadows. The opening scene places him amid a British rifle regiment, scrambling along a narrow mule‑track as French forces close in, the air filled with the sharp crack of rifles and the mournful call of a bugle. Through his eyes we taste the raw fear and camaraderie of soldiers fighting for survival in a landscape of chestnut groves, cork‑trees, and rushing rivers.

As the young man tries to keep pace with his officer, the narrative captures the stark contrast between the beauty of the valley and the relentless violence tearing through it. He must learn quickly what it means to be both a witness and a participant, grappling with the harsh reality that the line between hunter and hunted blurs with every shot. The story promises a vivid portrait of youthful courage, the harshness of war, and the fragile hope that can emerge even in the darkest moments.
