Description

In a cold February night, the last train has slipped away from Herne Hill, leaving the streets of Dulwich Road silent and empty. Alfred Paulton, a modest twenty‑eight‑year‑old fresh from a pleasant evening at his club, strolls home under the glow of a lonely lamp, his thoughts drifting between the evening’s laughter and the weight of a handsome bundle of notes in his pocket. The quiet is broken only by the distant rumble of the departing train and the crisp crunch of his own footsteps on the frosted pavement.

When he passes the doorway of the long‑vacant Crescent House, a woman’s desperate cry shatters the stillness: “What shall I do?” She stands framed by lamplight, her raven hair and glittering jewelry hinting at a world far removed from the shabby surroundings, yet her eyes reflect fear and uncertainty. Paulton must decide whether to step forward into the mystery that beckons, setting the stage for a tense encounter that promises both danger and an unexpected connection.
