In the dust‑browned streets of Marlin City, stage driver Romeo Kendall blunders into trouble after a false claim of robbery leaves the bank doubting his story. His slapstick attempt to woo Soapy Caswell’s daughter ends with a ladder mishap that strips him of his nickname and forces him to adopt the name Romeo. The incident fuels a bitter rivalry with the powerful Caswell and sets a tone of crooked deals and stubborn pride that will drive his next choices.
A few miles away, the Nine Bar Nine ranch stretches across cracked corrals and a weather‑worn house, overseen by sharp‑eyed Lafe Freeman. His remaining hands are Silent Slade, a hulking yet talkative gunslinger with a flamboyant hat, and Harp Harris, a lanky rope‑hand who carries a jew’s‑harp and dead‑pan humor. Together they tend a modest herd, but the quiet rhythm hints at uneasy currents that could draw Romeo into their world.
