Description

A young Maryland lawyer, spurred by the feverish land‑speculation of the late 1840s, trades his familiar surroundings for a ten‑thousand‑acre claim deep in Texas. He carries a freshly issued land‑scrip, a promise of ownership that could turn into either a fortune or a costly lesson. With a companion sharing the same gamble, he boards a modest schooner from Baltimore, hoping the new frontier will reward his boldness.

Upon reaching Galveston Bay, the narrator confronts a stark, almost otherworldly coast where flat, grassy shores blend into the water and only a trio of stunted trees mark the entrance. A misdirected pilot strands the vessel on a sandbank, and a daring little boat capsizes, leaving the pair drenched but undeterred. Their first steps onto the alien landscape are filled with bewilderment and wonder, setting the tone for a series of vivid, often humorous encounters with the raw, untamed Texas prairie.
