Switch off : or, The war of the students

At the Toppleton Institute, the students are preparing for an ambitious summer expedition. In full military formation, with muskets, wagons, provisions, tents, a polished band, and an enthusiastic crowd of spectators, they set out to camp in the countryside. What begins as an exciting exercise in discipline and adventure soon exposes the strains beneath the school’s orderly appearance.

At the center of the company is Tommy Toppleton, a confident young commander whose authority is matched by his stubbornness and appetite for control. Among the marching students, Ned observes the rivalries, disagreements, and tests of loyalty that turn a student outing into something resembling a real campaign. Their mock battles and wilderness hardships promise plenty of action, while questions of obedience and leadership give the escapade genuine stakes.

With humor, energy, and a strong feeling for youthful camaraderie, the story follows these schoolmates as they learn what courage and command really require. Beneath the marches and skirmishes lies a thoughtful lesson about patience, forgiveness, and the difficult work of making peace.
