Mooney spends his evenings huddled in a weather‑battered Jersey shore cottage, eking out a meager existence on tea, canned food and the remnants of his uncle’s pantry. A relentless December gale whips snow and sea spray across the windows, turning the world outside into a white, howling void. With the coast guard miles away and his only neighbor a half‑hour’s trek through the storm, he clings to routine—solitaire cards, a sputtering TV set, and the quiet comfort of a hot kettle.
When a sudden, frantic rapping at the door breaks the night’s monotony, Mooney’s cautious world tilts. He opens the door to a tall, lean stranger in a silvery leotard, eyes hard and angry, demanding entry into the only warm room in the house. The stranger’s sudden appearance raises urgent questions: Is he a threat, a rescuer, or something far stranger still?
Caught between the bitter cold outside and the unsettling presence inside, Mooney must decide whether to trust the newcomer or protect the fragile sanctuary he has built against the storm.

A sharp, funny voice in science fiction, this writer helped shape the genre for decades as both a novelist and an editor. His stories often mixed big future ideas with sly social criticism, making them feel lively and relevant long after they were written.
