A weary traveler named Sam checks into a cramped hotel high above the Hudson, his suitcase humming with a bizarre, booby‑trapped contraption. He bribes the bellboy with cash to keep a watchful eye while he slips away, all the while protecting a mysterious companion called Arthur—whose “kingdom” consists of nothing more than a handful of typewriter keys. The city outside churns with smoke and stalled traffic, hinting at a larger unrest that Sam hopes to avoid.
He heads out to a rundown department store known as PX, searching for an electric typewriter and other odd supplies that might unlock Arthur’s strange claim to power. Along the way he keeps a low profile, using aliases and extra cash to stay ahead of a shadowy figure named Vern Engdahl who seems to be tracking his movements. The tone mixes dry humor with a sense of underlying danger, setting the stage for a quest that blends urban grit with a surreal, almost medieval tech‑myth.
