Description

In the summer of 1880 the naturalist set off from Fort Wrangel in a small canoe, joining a crew of Tlingit men and a missionary who brings along an unexpected companion—a tiny black dog named Stickeen. Though the traveler initially doubts the pup’s usefulness in a harsh Alaskan expedition, the missionary swears the animal can endure cold, hunger, and water as well as any bear. The dog's wiry body, sharp eyes and unusually long, curling tail quickly make him a curiosity among the men.

As the canoe threads through the maze of islands, channels and snow‑capped peaks, Stickeen proves to be far more than a decorative mascot. He watches the crew with a quiet intelligence, springs into action when a landing is chosen, and disappears into the woods only to return with a splash, seemingly knowing exactly when he is needed. The narrative follows the growing respect between man and dog, set against the raw beauty and sudden storms of southeastern Alaska, inviting listeners to experience a wilderness adventure seen through a loyal, enigmatic companion.
