In the blistering heat of a Southwest desert, a bleached‑blond wanderer trudges across sand with his stubborn beast of burden, Amarilly. When he offers a parched stranger a drink, a wiry prospector named Taos Thompson appears—more interested in the thrill of the hunt than any promise of gold. Taos’s tangled hair, quick hands, and habit of soaking everything in axle‑grease make him a comical contrast to the narrator’s two‑gun routine. Their unlikely partnership forms over a shared thirst for the open trail.
Together they wander toward a shady mesquite snag called Poison Springs, where Taos discovers a tattered newspaper and devotes an hour to reading it like a holy text. The narrator watches the prospector’s reverent rituals—lighting a pipe, balancing bacon in a coffee cup, and muttering about love—while keeping a wary eye on the shifting sand. Their comic banter and cautious optimism hint at deeper mysteries hidden beneath the desert’s relentless sun, promising more strange encounters as the journey unfolds.
