DOOMED
The Constellation drifts through hyperspace, its eight‑thousand colonists clinging to a fragile hope of reaching the new world of Athena. When the ship is shattered by a sudden Gern cruiser attack, power fades and the hull groans, leaving the crew in darkness and scrambling for breath. At the center of the chaos, engineer Irene awakens to the chill of silence, the loss of her husband Dale, and the terrifying knowledge that the alien empire has declared war on Earth.
A lone Gern commander forces a grim surrender, ordering every passenger to stay sealed in their compartments, while the surviving officer broadcasts the stark directives. With only emergency batteries and primitive tools, the colonists must turn the ship’s empty corridors into a desperate battlefield, even fashioning bows against the empire’s blasters. Against this alien menace and a failing life‑support system, the stranded survivors are forced to confront their own resilience and the thin line between hope and extinction.

Best known for the classic short story "The Cold Equations," this American science fiction writer built a lasting reputation with lean, hard-edged tales that pushed characters into impossible choices. His work from the 1950s through the 1970s helped define one of science fiction's most debated moral dilemmas.
