In a modest but neatly furnished drawing‑room of a respectable widow’s house, an orphan named Elma Terho practices the violin under the exacting eye of her teacher, the celebrated school music master Hervenius. The scene is set in early twentieth‑century Helsinki, where the city’s cultural ambitions clash with the simple rhythms of the countryside. As Elma’s bow glides over the strings, her talent and restless spirit become clear, drawing both admiration and uneasy expectations.
Hervenius insists that Elma remain in the capital, arguing that her gifts belong to the nation’s artistic future, while the girl longs for the open fields of her farm home. Between them linger other figures—a youthful friend Raponen, a shy suitor Toivo, and the ever‑watchful aunt Åhlman—each hinting at hidden ties that might keep Elma anchored or set her free. Their strained dialogue, tinged with admiration, unspoken affection and a sense of duty, makes the opening a delicate dance of ambition and belonging, inviting listeners to follow Elma’s journey.
