Description

In this sharply observed sketch, a polished London financier named Reginald Blake lives by a strict, self‑serving code. He marries the beautiful but impoverished Edith Eppington more out of convenience than affection, treating the union as a calculated transaction that neatly fits his tidy reputation. Jerome’s narration paints Blake as a gentlemanly cad, whose polished manners hide a hollow interior, while the vibrant, Raphael‑like Edith offers a stark, almost sacrificial counterpoint.

Around them swirl a cast of minor figures—Harry Sennett, a well‑meaning but dim‑witted suitor, and a crowd of admirers and rivals—each adding a layer of social comedy to the fragile marriage. The story unfolds with witty dialogue and crisp observations, exposing the absurdities of class, duty, and the hollow promises of respectability. Listeners will be drawn into the charmingly bleak world of turn‑of‑the‑century London, where every polite smile may conceal a calculated bargain.
