Description

A brisk, observant traveler sets off from New York aboard the Pennsylvania Limited, watching the landscape roll by in a blur of wooden hamlets, lone fir‑trees and the occasional hawk‑winged sentinel. His commentary on the hurried American locomotives, the indifferent locals, and the stark contrast to the orderly European railways is both humorous and surprisingly tender. Along the way he befriends a bewildered English passenger, sharing breakfast and a quiet calumet, while the train hurtles toward the first of many stops.

Soon the journey opens onto a wider portrait of a continent in flux—buzzing cities, quiet plains, and the subtle rhythms of everyday life that the traveler records with wit and curiosity. As the rail line pushes him farther west, he prepares for an unexpected three‑month immersion among the Mormon communities, promising a deeper look at a distinctive slice of American faith and culture. The early chapters set the stage for a vivid, personable exploration of a nation on the move.
