Set in the rolling fields of southern Häme, the tale opens in the modest Jukola homestead, where seven brothers—Juhani, Tuomas, Aapo, Simeoni, Timo, Lauri and the youngest Eero—grow up under the shadow of their father's fierce reputation as a forest hunter. Their rugged bodies and dark, unkempt hair mark them as children of the wild, yet they share a stubborn reluctance to submit to the steady rhythm of farm work and village expectations. Their mother, a stern but caring woman, and their blind, story‑telling uncle strive to steer them toward industry, but the brothers cling to the freedom of the woods and their own impetuous plans.
The narrative follows the brothers’ early misadventures, from daring raids on a neighboring henhouse to secret feasts cooked over smoky embers, illustrating their bond and their defiant spirit. As they grapple with the pull of family duty and the lure of untamed independence, the story paints a vivid picture of rural life, brotherly loyalty, and the struggle to find one’s place in a world that insists on conformity.
