Description

In a modest Häme village, the bustling household of Topias the shoemaker is anything but ordinary. His wife Martta runs the home with a fierce determination, while their son Esko dreams of a wedding that could secure a hefty inheritance—five hundred rix. Around them gather a colorful cast: the diligent lock‑smith Sepeteus, the caring foster‑girl Jaana, the ambitious young smith Kristo, and a host of villagers whose lives intersect in the cramped rooms and attic lofts of the family’s cottage.

As the first act unfolds, the tension between duty and desire sharpens. Martta, fearing the loss of family wealth, pushes Esko toward a marriage that would bind the estate, while Esko’s own plans and the meddling of friends threaten to upend her schemes. Meanwhile, whispers of past grievances and hidden motives drift through the chatter of the townsfolk, setting the stage for a lively, comical clash of wills that captures the spirit of rural Finnish life.
