Description

A bright, warm May day in 1873 finds two very different travelers stepping aboard a steam‑powered vessel bound for Zeeland. One is a Dutchman returning home after years abroad, eager to rediscover the familiar yet remote province. The other is a strikingly curious stranger from the southern mountains, whose eyes have never seen the sea and who hopes to learn the character of the low‑lying Dutch coast. Their shared voyage becomes a gentle invitation to explore a landscape long described as “lost among the waters.”

As the boat glides past the broad, shimmering Scheldt, the narrative captures the play of light on endless water, the red‑tiled roofs and green dikes that dot the horizon, and the subtle rhythm of life along the riverbanks. Friendly villagers open their homes, inns, and salons, while the author’s keen eye records the distinctive customs, dialects, and scenery in a series of lively sketches. Listeners are treated to an intimate portrait of a region where water dominates the view, yet the people’s warmth makes the place feel unmistakably human.
