In the bustling heart of Madrid, the famed matador Juan Gallardo spends the morning in a quiet hotel on Calle de Alcalá, polishing his image with a cigarette and a ring on his finger. The air is thick with the scent of leather, tobacco and perfume, while travelers drift past, casting curious glances at the young legend whose reputation precedes him. Gallardo’s routine—early meat, black coffee, and ritual grooming—belies the nervous tremor that rides his thoughts as he awaits the arena. He balances the pride of an idol with a hidden dread that every bull could be his last.
The opening day of the corrida finds Gallardo caught between two worlds: the glittering admiration of admirers and the looming danger of the ring. He envisions the triumph of a well‑timed charge, the fleeting pleasure of a night in a music‑hall with a chanteuse he once met, and the fragile promise of a few days of peace. Yet the hotel’s “good shade” feels fragile, and the inevitable pull of the bullring promises a test of courage that may reshape his destiny.
