SAM'S GHOST
A night‑watchman on a lonely river jetty becomes the reluctant keeper of a local legend. As fog rolls over the water and the wind whistles through the posts, he hears the tale of Sam Bullet—a boisterous waterman who vanished overboard and whose restless spirit now haunts the wharf. The watchman’s routine is interrupted by whispered warnings from Sam’s surviving mates, hinting that the ghost may have unfinished business.
Caught between loyalty to Sam’s grieving wife and a nagging suspicion about a gold watch and chain he once lent the dead man, the narrator wrestles with a moral dilemma that deepens the mystery. When a nervous friend arrives, shaking and claiming to have seen Sam’s apparition, a chilling message is delivered that forces the watchman to confront the unseen forces lingering on the riverbank. The story blends gritty dockside life with eerie folklore, inviting listeners to linger in the mist‑laden atmosphere and wonder what lies beyond the last light.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
