Saïd lives in a modest stone‑capped dwelling by the sea, its single room scented with the salty air and the smoke of his nightly narghileh. He spends his days drifting in shallow waters, casting nets from a friend’s boat and hauling whatever the tide offers to sell in the bustling market. Though his catch is modest, he dreams of saving enough to buy a coffee‑house, trade his nets for a comfortable chair, and someday rise to the rank of a respected Bey. The simple rhythm of his life is punctuated by the occasional laugh of fellow townsfolk and the distant call of gulls over the fig‑tree that shades his roof.
One evening, as Saïd counts his hard‑won coins on the sand, two Turkish cavalry burst through the dunes, their shouts scattering his earnings like dust. He scrambles to recover the savings, only to find a few copper pieces amid the chaos. The loss leaves him clutching his ambitions tighter, hinting at a journey that may force him to confront more than just the sea’s fickle fortunes.
