A weather‑worn sperm whaler drifts toward the bright peaks of the Samoan islands, its canvas billowing against a sea as calm as a mountain lake. Onboard, the crew lives under the iron fist of Captain Lucy, a seasoned yet volatile leader whose harsh discipline has already sparked a violent clash between the young boat‑steerer Gerald Rodman and the ship’s cooper. The dispute lands several men, including the two Rodmans, in the stifling confines of the sail‑locker, where they survive on meager rations while tensions simmer among the rest of the crew.
Just as the ship’s fate hangs in the balance, a lookout’s cry—“There she blows!”—alerts everyone to a massive pod of sperm whales nearby. The sudden promise of a hunt ignites a frantic rush to launch the boats, pitting the crew’s desperate need for a catch against the captain’s unforgiving resolve. As the whalers prepare for the chase, the fragile peace aboard the Shawnee teeters on the edge of another, perhaps more dangerous, confrontation.
