A cool trade wind lifts the white mountain mist over dark valleys, unveiling a quiet island where a trading schooner has just anchored. Denison, the supercargo, is greeted by the white‑haired trader Handle and his lively family, who suggest a day of hunting through the lush forest. The party—Hester, Kate, and their brother Harry—sets out with guns and a basket of provisions, eager to explore the rugged terrain.
Their trek brings them to a modest village at the mountain’s base, where a crystal stream rushes past palm‑fringed banks and children shout about the arrival of strangers. At its center stands Old Mary’s cottage, home to a blind yet indomitable woman famed for saving a ship when her husband fell. Invited inside, Denison meets the resilient figure in a blue gown, her missing hand a quiet reminder of a life marked by courage and loss.

Drawn from real experience in the Pacific, these stories carry the feel of salt air, danger, and far-off islands. His life as a trader and wanderer gave his fiction an unusual immediacy that still sets it apart.
