Description

A restless town awakens after a night of bewildering rumors and whispered accusations. The narrator and his friend Stepan Trofimovitš find themselves at the center of a tangled web of disappearances, faintly heard sighs behind locked doors, and a baffling episode involving a sudden fainting spell that spreads like gossip through every hallway. As neighbors gossip about mysterious “kompurajalas,” hidden motives begin to surface, and the seemingly ordinary streets pulse with an undercurrent of fear and curiosity.

Against this backdrop, old grudges and new ideologies clash, pulling young aristocrats and servants alike into a dangerous game of secrecy and loyalty. The story probes how personal ambition intertwines with radical ideas, leaving each character to wrestle with doubt, betrayal, and the lure of power. Listeners will be drawn into the claustrophobic atmosphere of a community on the brink, where every whispered conversation may be the spark that ignites something far larger.

About the author

Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Fyodor Dostoyevsky

1821–1881

One of literature’s great explorers of conscience and conflict, he wrote novels that turn guilt, faith, freedom, and suffering into gripping drama. His stories still feel startlingly modern for the way they dive into the mind under pressure.
