Description

The story opens in a quiet provincial town where the narrator prepares to recount a series of strange events that have recently slipped into everyday life. Central to this tale is Stepan Trofimovich, a charismatic intellectual who fashions himself as a model citizen and delights in the role he plays in society. His habit of presenting lofty ideas as a form of personal theatre has earned him both admiration and subtle ridicule, setting the tone for the tangled relationships that will unfold.

Behind Stepan’s polished façade, the novel begins to reveal a restless undercurrent of conflicting beliefs. Young aristocrats, idealistic poets, and secretive agitators each bring their own visions of change, hinting at a gathering storm that threatens to upend the town’s fragile equilibrium. As the characters navigate love, ambition, and a looming sense of moral crisis, listeners are drawn into a richly textured portrait of a world poised on the brink of upheaval—one that invites reflection on the price of conviction and the fragile nature of social order.

About the author

Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Fyodor Dostoyevsky

1821–1881

One of literature’s great explorers of conscience and conflict, he wrote novels that turn guilt, faith, freedom, and suffering into gripping drama. His stories still feel startlingly modern for the way they dive into the mind under pressure.
