Alaric Dale Todd, a seventeen‑year‑old heir to a Pacific‑coast fortune, has spent his life wrapped in silk, polished shoes and endless lectures on geography and literature. Despite his privileged upbringing, he is thin, pale, and denied any rough sport, his mother fearing a weak heart, so his world has been confined to drawing rooms and well‑trimmed gardens. His immaculate attire and encyclopedic knowledge set him apart from his more boisterous peers, leaving him to wonder whether a name like “Allie” can ever match the man he wishes to become.
When his mother finally decides to take him beyond the safe confines of San Francisco, a journey to the wild Northwest Coast promises the first taste of real adventure. Along the rugged shoreline, encounters with colorful characters such as the daring Bonny and the enigmatic Skookum John pull Alaric toward a world of ice, sea, and untamed possibility. As the young heir confronts the raw beauty and hidden dangers of the coast, he must decide whether to cling to his polished past or forge a new identity amid the tide‑washed cliffs.
