Description

At the crack of a bell‑clear Tuesday morning, a ragtag band of the Dashahed Zouaves gathers on a sun‑lit lawn, their uniforms bright as the buttons they polish. Led by the good‑natured Colonel Freddy, they bobble between boastful dreams of heroic deeds and the very real trouble of spilling coffee on a breakfast table. The camp hums with the banter of privates who claim they could capture a two‑ton cannon with one hand, while old Jerry Pike, a retired English servant, watches with a mixture of nostalgia and weary amusement.

Their enthusiasm quickly turns to a makeshift drill, as Peter persuades the men to enlist Jerry for a lesson in marching, hoping to impress an imagined General McClellan. The slightest mishap—a tipped tray, a clumsy elbow—still feels like grand adventure in this playful portrait of amateur soldiers on the brink of actual conflict. The story captures the chaotic charm of a Civil‑War era militia, blending period detail with a lighthearted, almost farcical tone that invites listeners to laugh along with the troupe’s earnest, if misguided, preparations.
