Description

Set against the rugged backcountry of the western Carolinas in 1784, the story opens in Jonesboro, a rough‑hewn settlement where isolated farms cling to the edge of untamed forest. The town’s lone tavern, run by Polcher—a half‑Cherokee who walks a tightrope between cultures—buzzes with weary trappers, secretive rustlers and a restless air of lawlessness. When the boisterous Lon Hester bursts in, his drunken bravado and whispered intrigues threaten to stir the fragile peace, hinting at deeper conflicts between settlers, native nations and the shadowy forces that linger beyond the mountains.

Through vivid dialogue and a palpable sense of place, the novel immerses listeners in a world of smoky log cabins, simmering brandy and fierce loyalties. As Hester’s reckless words ripple through the tavern, alliances are tested and old grievances surface, promising a tense dance of honor and betrayal. The opening act lays a gritty foundation for a tale where survival hinges as much on whispered promises as on the swing of a rifle.
