Description

Ralph Fairbanks is a young railroader who has risen from fireman to train dispatcher, earning the trust of his superiors at the Great Northern. He’s sharp‑witted, good‑looking, and modest, even as the admiration of his coworkers and the local girls begins to grow. The story opens with him called into the general manager’s office, where they confront a brewing trouble‑maker strike among the maintenance crew.

Ralph quickly sees that the dispute isn’t about the rules themselves but about the workers’ sense of independence—down to something as simple as a change in cap style. As the fire that threatens the line draws nearer, he must bridge the gap between management and labor while trying to prevent a disaster on the midnight flyer. His dedication to the railroad and his knack for seeing both sides set the stage for a tense, action‑filled adventure that captures the pulse of early 20th‑century rail life.

Best known as one of the house names of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, this byline appeared on brisk, adventure-filled books for young readers in the early 1900s. It’s especially linked with stories about trains, business, schoolboy exploits, and the fast-moving world of early radio.
