Description

In the bustling hub of Stanley Junction, the Great Northern Railroad’s switch tower looms like a glass‑capped beacon over the tracks. Jack Knight, a hulking veteran whose ten‑year record boasts no accidents, commands the levers with an eagle’s eye, while his assistant Mort Bemis drifts between idle chatter and careless habits. A momentary lapse—a slipped hand on a spring bar—leaves Jack grievously wounded and Mort dismissed, throwing the former tower keeper into a sudden, painful reckoning.

Desperate to stay afloat, Mort hurries down the trap‑door ladder, only to run into Ralph Fairbanks, a bright‑eyed newcomer in a crisp uniform. The clash of their attitudes—Mort’s sour resignation against Ralph’s eager ambition—sparks a tense confrontation that hints at deeper rivalries within the rail yard. As the whistle blows and the tracks hum with incoming trains, listeners are drawn into a world where a single misstep can turn a respected career into a precarious fight for survival.

Best known as one of the house names of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, this byline appeared on brisk, adventure-filled books for young readers in the early 1900s. It’s especially linked with stories about trains, business, schoolboy exploits, and the fast-moving world of early radio.
