Description

A charismatic London gentleman, once famed for his daring burglaries, now finds himself scribbling articles on prison life and hunting for a respectable gig. One morning a cryptic telegram leads him to a puzzling advertisement for a “male nurse” to tend an elderly gentleman—a role that promises a steady salary and a welcome escape from his cramped attic. Intrigued and desperate for a fresh start, he dons a modest suit and a new hat, setting off for a modest flat in Earl’s Court, where the promise of comfort hangs alongside a hint of old‐world intrigue.

Arriving at the modest building, he meets a weary doctor and a stern porter, each hinting at hidden layers beneath the seemingly simple job. As he steps into this unexpected world, his impeccable manners and razor‑sharp wit begin to clash with the shadows of his past, promising a tale that weaves clever deception, genteel satire, and the relentless pull of adventure.

E. W. (Ernest William) Hornung

1866–1921

Best remembered as the creator of A. J. Raffles, the charming gentleman thief, he helped turn crime fiction on its head by making the criminal the hero. His stories mix wit, suspense, and a sharp feel for late-Victorian and Edwardian life.
