Description

The narrator sets off for the famed St. Margaret's Bay, lured by glowing travel brochures and the great painter Alma Tadema’s summer studio. What follows is a delightfully absurd trek from the dusty railway halt at Martin’s Mill, past twirling telegraph poles and a succession of oddly named cottages that promise “Marine Lodge” and “Swiss chalet” far from any sea or Alps. The essay offers wry observations about the landscape’s false promises and the weary patience required of a Victorian tourist.

When the coast finally appears, the bay is a modest stretch of sand dotted with a few bathing machines, a light‑ship, and a lawn‑tennis hotel that seems more earnest than enchanting. The piece sprinkles gentle mockery of seaside conventions, notes a melancholy picnic, and even veers into a brief tribute to a cricket hero from the second‑class counties. All of it is delivered in Punch’s trademark blend of satire and affectionate teasing, making the work a charming snapshot of leisure and folly at the turn of the century.
