A well‑meaning gentleman, Bulger, receives a doctor’s prescription for fresh air and is sent to the famed links of St. Andrews, armed with a puzzling assortment of clubs and little sport experience. The story follows his comic first day as he grapples with bewildering swings, listens to a sharp‑tongued orphan boy’s advice, and watches a single drive disappear into a river, a bunker, and even a neighbor’s garden. The dry, Victorian satire gently mocks both the newcomer’s confidence and the genteel rituals surrounding the game.
Bulger’s frustration turns into reluctant triumph as the orphan boy offers sardonic commentary and the Head of the Faculty pushes him to keep a daily round. Listeners can picture the clatter of clubs, the swirl of sand, and the occasional bewildered grin that marks each miss and hit. By staying within his first attempts, the tale leaves the listener curious about how far this accidental golfer might go, without revealing any later exploits.
