Description

A tongue‑in‑cheek confession opens the piece, where an eager but chronically unlucky hunter laments the very idea of deer‑stalking. He bemoans legislative attempts to open the Scottish mountains, fearing they will only lead crowds to the pub rather than to the hills, while he himself is forced into the wilderness as a reluctant assistant to a towering guide named Hugh. The narrator’s vivid, self‑deprecating descriptions of bogs, peat‑soaked climbs and endless sun‑burn make the absurdity of his situation both relatable and laugh‑out‑loud funny.

His misadventures quickly turn technical when he is handed a modern rifle he barely understands. Each attempt to fire results in a comical malfunction, leaving him to watch the startled deer vanish while he wrestles with safety bolts and half‑cocked hammers. The humor lies in his nervous narration, the contrast between lofty hunting ideals and his clumsy reality.

Through lively language and witty observation, the excerpt captures Victorian satire at its best: a playful critique of sport, class, and the romanticism of the highlands, all delivered through the eyes of a hapless, well‑meaning “duffer.
