Description

A weary narrator wanders the streets of The Hague, seeking companionship in an unexpected guide—a tiny, felt‑hatted Dutchman named Bosch. Their conversations swing between earnest curiosity and bewildering nonsense, as Bosch translates the city’s signs with a charmingly garbled English that leaves the visitor both amused and perplexed. The narrator’s inner debate between a “Sandford” yearning for knowledge and a “Merton” wary of facts creates a humorous tension that propels the stroll.

Bosch leads the pair past a silent statue, a chemist’s shop marked by a tongue‑sticking Turk’s head, and a fish market where live storks are ceremonially kept for the city’s arms. Along the way he recounts odd local tales—suicides, mysterious baronial residents, and the macabre implements of an old prison that still spark his delighted commentary. The episode blends vivid Dutch ambience with sharp satire, offering a playful glimpse into a world where history and hilarity collide.
