Description

A bustling London platform becomes a stage for relentless advertising, where even a simple choice of confectionery is eclipsed by the omnipresent call for “Higlinson’s Blacking‑cream.” The story follows the man behind the brand, a surprisingly tender‑hearted entrepreneur whose name has been reduced to a household product. Sensitive and solitary, he tries his hand at melancholy verse, only to be mocked by critics who treat his poetry as another gimmick for sales.

Undeterred, he redirects his wealth toward quiet philanthropy, working among the city’s most disadvantaged and funding education and leisure for those on the streets. When a scandalous article in a rival paper humiliates him publicly, his attempt at retaliation backfires, turning the humiliation into further publicity for his cream. Yet the ridicule also opens a door to unexpected personal connections, prompting him to reconsider his solitary life and the image he has cultivated.
